Maintaining bone health becomes increasingly important with age, as declining bone density can increase the risk of fractures and affect quality of life. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, alongside a balanced diet, physical activity, and assessment of risk factors, are among the key measures for supporting bone health in adulthood and old age.

In this context, an Iranian knowledge-based company has developed and commercialized a nano-formulated calcium supplement containing calcium in a nanoliposomal formulation, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D3. The supplement is designed to help maintain bone strength and support dental health in adults. According to the company, the liposomal formulation is intended to improve the absorption of the ingredients.

Calcium is one of the principal minerals that make up bones and teeth. Over time, inadequate calcium intake can affect bone health, alongside other contributing factors. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, while magnesium and zinc play roles in various physiological processes associated with normal bodily function and bone tissue health. For this reason, some calcium supplements include additional ingredients alongside the mineral itself.

Each tablet contains 500 milligrams of elemental calcium in nanoliposomal form, 150 milligrams of elemental magnesium in the form of magnesium oxide, 10 milligrams of elemental zinc in the form of zinc gluconate, and 1,200 international units (IU) of vitamin D3.

The amount of elemental calcium refers to the quantity of calcium itself in a compound, rather than the total weight of the chemical substance carrying it.

Liposomal technology relies on structures composed of lipid bilayers to encapsulate or transport active compounds. Such structures are used in certain pharmaceutical formulations and dietary supplements to improve the delivery and bioavailability of ingredients. In the product described, the company has employed a nanoliposomal formulation for calcium.

However, the extent to which this technology improves calcium absorption depends on the specific formulation, product stability, and the results of product-specific testing. The use of the term “nano” alone does not establish that a product is more effective.

The supplement is marketed for daily use, but the appropriate dose and duration of use should be determined according to individual needs, dietary intake, health status, and the instructions provided on the product label. Supplements are not necessary for everyone, and excessive intake of certain nutrients can also cause health problems. In particular, people with underlying medical conditions or those taking specific medications should consult a physician or pharmacist when selecting a supplement and determining the appropriate dosage.

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by reduced bone density and strength, which increases the risk of fractures. Older age, family history, physical inactivity, inadequate nutrient intake, and certain diseases or medications can contribute to the risk of developing the condition. Calcium and vitamin D supplements may form part of a bone-health care plan for people whose dietary intake is insufficient. However, supplements alone cannot replace medical assessment, appropriate nutrition, physical activity, or any medication required to treat osteoporosis.

The company has previously introduced other nano-enabled nutritional supplements, including iron and zinc products. According to the company, its iron supplement was designed to reduce tooth discoloration in children. The company has also stated that its zinc supplement was developed using a liposomal formulation intended to improve absorption and reduce interactions with iron and calcium compounds. Independent assessment of these claimed properties would require technical data and studies specific to each product.

According to Iran’s Nano Headquarters, the company also unveiled a product containing amorolfine in the autumn of this year to combat fungal nail infections. This condition, known as onychomycosis, can cause nail discoloration, thickening, and brittleness.

The newly introduced product takes the form of a colorless solution applied to the nail surface. After drying, the medication gradually penetrates the nail. The company developed the formulation with the aim of enabling the slow release of the active drug.
