download all picturesTEHRAN (ANA)- Deep inside the desert of Central Iran sits an old metropolis of Yazd which was the first Iranian city to be added by the UNESCO to the World Heritage List for its unique architecture and indigenous features making the city an enjoyable residential area in the midst of a harshly dry and hot desert.
The historic city of Yazd is believed to be the world's largest inhabited adobe city. Sun-dried adobe is the material for many cities in dry areas in all over the world. However, creative and artistic use of the material for building a big city is the feature that is unique to Yazd.
Ancient residents of Yazd had to be creative and industrious to make their hometown livable because they were deprived of natural blessings like water and rich land. As a result, they developed many technologies like Badgeer, which is a Wind Tower Cooling System to ventilate places in hot summer days, and Qanat, which is an underground aqueduct to carry water from mountains to deserts.
