Over the past decade, the issue of generating renewable energy has been raised as one of the main concerns of countries in order to reduce the adverse environmental and social effects of fossil fuels, Hossein Gitinavard, the project manager, said.

"To this end, generating energy from biomass as a renewable and environmentally friendly fuel to replace fossil fuels is regarded as a suitable solution for this problem," Gitinavard said.

“So, the optimal design of a biomass energy production network, as the most important strategic decision in this chain, plays an essential role in economic, environmental, and social performance".

The project has been carried out in order to determine a sustainable renewable product as an input to the supply chain with regard to candidate renewable products to produce energy from biomass, he explained.

Managing factors such as floods and unfavorable weather conditions affecting crops in order to prevent disruptions in the supply chain was another goal of the project, Gitinavard noted.

The use of modeling based on smart algorithms in order to take into account the requirements of the real world can play a significant role in minimizing the costs in the sustainable design of the biomass energy network, he highlighted.

Managers of renewable energy development projects, as well as other organizations involved in the supply chain, including refineries and farms, can also benefit from the results of this research.
